Time Duration Calculator Guide: Calculate Hours, Minutes, and Seconds

Time duration is the amount of time between two clock readings. It is used when you need to measure a shift, trip, meeting, video length, or any other interval that starts at one time and ends at another.

Convert both clock times into total seconds. For a same-day interval, subtract the start total from the end total. If the end is on the next day, add 86,400 seconds to the end total first. Then convert the difference back into hours, minutes, and seconds.

Start: 09:15:00
End: 12:40:30

Start: 22:30:00
End: 05:10:00 (next day)

Because the end time is earlier on the clock than the start time, add 24:00:00 to the end time before subtracting: 05:10:00 + 24:00:00 = 29:10:00.

In the calculator, select the next-day option for this example. The tool does not assume that every earlier end-clock value belongs to the following day, so the overnight interpretation must be explicit.

Manual calculations go wrong most often when AM/PM values get mixed with 24-hour values mid-calculation. Convert everything to 24-hour format first (2:00 PM becomes 14:00) so subtraction works on one consistent scale.
